Pink Floyd as a lifestyle - Part 1 - The Discovery

I remember listening to the Racer X song 'Technical Difficulties' back in April this year. Just as the guitarsolo (from 2:20 and on) was finishing, my father came in and said "that solo was pretty much just the same as the one in 'Comfortably Numb'. "Comfortably Numb?" I thought to myself askingly, so I searched for it on Youtube and let's just say that the following 6 minutes are some of the most enjoyable I've ever had. That was however not the first time i heard Pink Floyd, as it was part of music history in my music class in secondary school, but it was the first time i heard Pink Floyd at home, with my own stereo, at my own initiative and not as part of a rather boring day at school. It didn't take long until I checked out the other songs, but except for 'Another Brick In The Wall Part 3', and 'Is There Anybody Out There' it didn't really grip me.

I've always listened to different kinds of music in different periods of my life, and at the time I discovered Pink Floyd I mostly listened to dubstep and different kinds of metal. Actually you can see what I listen to, how much, how often, and everything by checking out my Last.FM profile. However, one thing all the previous artists I've listened to have in common is that their songs do just as well as a single as part of an album. This is not so much the case with Pink Floyd, at least not with The Wall. It took several weeks for me to realize how the proper way to listen to Pink Floyd is, and to realize that they might have several other good albums... Such as 'The Dark Side of The Moon', and Roger Waters solo album 'The Pros And Cons of Hitch Hiking'

I'll elaborate more about that in the upcoming part 2. Until then I'll leave you with this piece of music.

  1. And I remember watching 'The Wall' for the first time, not understanding a thing. Pink Floyd has in some mysterious way always been part of my life, without me noticing it much until lately. It's still growing on me.
